VASER Liposuction Video with Q&A

Monday, January 4th, 2010 by editor

Q: What is the best method of liposuction?

A: There is no best method because each platform has its own benefits. For example, water-assisted liposuction can remove a large volume of fat, while VASER liposuction is good for ultra-precise body contouring.

Q: Why do I keep hearing about new liposuction methods?

A: Plastic and cosmetic surgeons are trying to set themselves apart with more effective liposuction methods. You might hear about “reduced downtime” or “reduced trauma to surrounding tissues” in the marketing for these procedures; just know that any proven liposuction technique will utilize the same basic tools as the standard tumescent liposuction technique.

Q: Can I get liposuction anywhere on my body? What is the most common area to treat?

A: Lots of people are surprised to hear that liposuction can treat many areas of the body. Areas like the abdomen and thighs are probably most common, but you can get liposuction below your chin or even around your knees.

Q: What type of doctor is most qualified to perform liposuction?

A: To get the best results, see a plastic surgeon for your liposuction.

Q: Is liposuction “minimally-invasive” like some of the advertising says?

A: The techniques have improved over time, making recovery quicker and incisions smaller, but liposuction is still cosmetic surgery. It’s not like getting a quick Botox injection.

Is Male Breast Reduction a Permanent Solution?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 by newseditor

I’m considering a male breast reduction but wondering, can the breast tissue grow back over time?  I don’t want to go through with surgery if the results aren’t going to be permanent.

Male breast reduction is performed to correct gynecomastia, a condition of excess male breast tissue.  The surgery removes breast tissue and fatty tissue to provide a flatter, more natural looking chest.

In some cases, the condition is caused by a disease, drug, or some other lifestyle factor. However, many patients have simply gained fat in the chest because of weight fluctuations.

Can the condition recur? If you gain fat due to poor diet and exercise, then the fatty tissue left over in the chest can grow again.  Also, if you have a disease, medication, or drug associated with your gynecomastia, and if that is not controlled, then it will most certainly recur.  It is very important to resolve these issues before surgery.

For the vast majority of patients, the condition does not recur.   Our male breast reduction procedure uses VASER liposuction and produces excellent aesthetic results.

Recent Developments in the World of Liposuction

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 by newseditor

San Francisco liposuctionThe past few years have brought many new advancements in the science of liposuction. Unfortunately, those advancements have also brought lots of misinformation and confusion about the effectiveness and safety of the procedure.

At the present time, professionals in the industry are pushing several different procedures that all claim to eradicate excess fat to perform – our new favorite buzzword – body contouring.

I don’t recommend that consumers attempt to wade through all of the different brand names being touted as the latest and greatest liposuction device. But on the other hand, understanding the technology can give you a more objective picture of what your surgeon is offering.

Keep in mind that most of the new liposuction offerings are basically the same as traditional liposuction; they’re just aided by a device or technique that prepares fat for easy removal.

  • Ultrasonic liposuction, what we offer, is a method that uses soundwaves to emulsify fat before removal. A recent study published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal refuted the idea that ultrasonic lipo destroyed fat cells, proving that viable fat cells could be harvested with the technique.  What this means is that Ultrasonic liposuction such as VASER can be used in fat transfer or fat grafting procedures. Read more here: VASER liposuction and fat transfer.
  • Laser liposuction or laser lipolysis uses a cannula that applies laser energy to fat cells during the procedure, which allows them to drain away easier.
  • Tumescent liposuction is a technique that may be combined with others listed. The fat is saturated with a tumescent liquid that contains the local anesthetic, lidocaine.
  • Lipodissolve or injection lipolysis is marketed as a non-invasive liposuction alternative. The procedure breaks down fat by injecting chemicals such as phosphatidylcholine into areas that need slimming. What’s disconcerting about lipodissolve is the lack of FDA regulation and research backing the treatment. According to a recent press release, the FDA is (finally) investigating the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
